Some sources say that Oscar nominee Renée Zellweger appeared on the 1991 spin-off episode "Top of the Heap" (0525) as "Mindy", but she's not credited and nobody could identify her on that show so far. If this was true it would have been her very first TV or movie appearance. However, she was probably mistaken for Joey Lauren Adams who plays "Mona" on that show. Renée Zellweger fan sites say that this is a common mistake.

Divine (Harris Glenn Milstead) was booked to play Uncle Otto which was planned to be a recurring character. Usually Divine played as a drag queen, but this time he should have played as a man. His first episode would have been "All in the Family" (0222), but he didn't show up on the set to take part in the rehearsals on March 7, 1988. His personal manager and biographer, Bernard Jay, discovered him dead in his hotel suite. This caused a gap of seven weeks between the premieres of episode 0221 and 0222. Uncle Otto was finally played by James "Gypsy" Haake. The end credits of episode 222 contain the following message: THIS EPISODE IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF DIVINE 1945-1988.

Tonya Harding (the figure skater whose friend hit her rival Nancy Kerrigan on the knee with a stick some weeks before the 1994 Winter Olympics) was offered to have a cameo on the show. She didn't accept as the script wanted her to gesticulate with a stick.
